Can you expand your social network in a meaningful and organic way by interacting with strangers more regularly and making sure the content you post is original and honest? Seems like you should, I guess we'll see!

If you sit down at a table for dinner with a bunch of tech entrepreneurs as I did in early January, it’s just a matter of time before people start swapping metrics. Unique hits per month to their site, followers on Twitter, and application downloads are all different statistics that people use to compare the traction of their product or service with the general public, and to brag to each other. These metrics aren’t foolproof and can at times misrepresent a person or company, but for the most part they do offer a glimpse into that individual or organization’s clout. A tech CEO with 150,000 followers on Twitter is going to be able to get his message out and publicize his company much easier than someone with 100 followers, plain and simple. And while most of your followers on any social network are not going to immediately become customers or turn into conversions every time you post a tweet or status update, some of them will and it benefits you to play to the numbers. So let’s play!

Last week I was sitting in front of my computer and debating the different methods available to someone who wants to increase their number of followers on Twitter and/or Facebook. I use Twitter regularly and have enjoyed it immensely since I started a few years back, but have only gained 100+ followers in the couple years I have been Tweeting. In fairness, I haven’t really made much of an effort to collect more followers, and only in recent months have I really started using it for active social networking. I’m ready to change that though, ready to get serious about growing my social network and my following, and I want to do it organically.

There are a hundred different services you can sign up for, and programs you can download that promise to get you thousands of followers in a very short time and help your social network explode, but it all just seems so dishonest. The whole purpose of Twitter is for you to be able to put your thoughts out there and share the things that interest you with the world, and those who find you interesting or provocative will choose to follow you if they wish to know more. I know that these services or software suites that help you acquire more followers are not entirely honest and a lot of the followers you pick up are fake accounts created only to follow people or collect information. Of course some of them are real followers, but it’s not honest. It’s not the pure way to accumulate followers, the way Twitter founder Jack Dorsey intended people to gather followers and so I will not use any services, software, or cheap tactics and will instead do it the old fashioned way: by posting my thoughts and feelings, interesting content and by reaching out to individuals and creating real, content based correspondence instead of just endlessly posting links to articles and funny cartoons and re-tweeting every post that comes across my feed.

This blog will serve as a running diary of my attempts to drastically increase my Twitter follower-ship without employing any dishonest tactics. I will update it regularly and keep you informed of how I’m doing and share any insight I’ve gleaned along the way. My twitter account name is @PaulKeepsItReal and I am the CEO and Founder of New Union Media. I want to start adding followers like it’s going out of style, but I wish to do so honestly and organically. This is my experiment. My initial approach will consist of the following tactics:

  1. TweetDeckTweetDeck is a endlessly useful tool that allows you to post Tweets to your account, monitor all the people you follow, view all the @mentions you get and filter the Twittersphere in any way you want to find useful information or people to follow. A must for Twitter users, now owned and updated by Twitter with a great in-browser extension for Chrome. And of course it’s free!
  2. Follow 10 New People Each Day – In order to increase the number of people who are exposed to me, I need to increase the number of people that I am exposed to. While I will shoot to increase my follower-ship by more than 10 people a day, I will make sure that I am seeking out and following at least 10 new people every day in order to keep my network fresh and growing.
  3. Meaningful Tweets – The number one thing that causes me to stop following someone on Twitter is “Re-Tweet Abuse”. I don’t believe that is a real term, but I’m going to start using it anyway. There is nothing more annoying that someone who Tweets 250 times a day and 245 of those Tweets are retweets of other people’s original content or articles that they read, or read part of. Don’t abuse Twitter! If your post isn’t worth other peoples time (or at least funny), don’t post it.
  4. Promote My Own Original Content – 9 times out of 10 when someone is posting a link to an article, it’s not an article they wrote. Most of the time it’s not even an article they read, but they like the title so they’re re-posting it in hopes of making them look more savvy. I hate this. I will make a regular habit of posting my own original content to promote that is meaningful and supports the industry and company I’m trying to promote.

I’m sure there are a lot of other things I can do to increase my followership, but these are the four things I’m going to focus on in the short term. The list of things I’m going to do will surely grow and as I get feedback and suggestions from my friends and followers I will amend and update this list to reflect my new practices. Right now I have 109 followers and am following 104 people on Twitter. This week I will try to add 100 new followers and will find at least 50 interesting people to follow that I believe will help me to stay better informed and grow my social network.

There are a lot of options facing anyone looking to build a website, such as who to hire and what design to use but most people in the market for a website aren’t even aware that they need to be thinking about the software that’s going to run the site as well. Nowadays, any new website being built is integrated with software to control the content or service provided by the website, and if you’re paying for a website that doesn’t have some kind of CMS (content management system) you’re getting ripped off. The emergence of the CMS in the 21st century has given the ordinary person the ability to control and update the content of their website at their own discretion, something that they used to need a “webmaster” to do. Remember that term, webmaster?

A developer's job of turning designs into websites can be extremely difficult if the designer doesn't understand the rules of text on the web. The key . . . Communication!

As web developers, our job is to turn beautiful paintings into beautiful machines. But effective as we are, and talented as many of the designers are with whom we work, communication breakdowns and knowledge gaps remain that make our work harder, and our output poorer then we’d like. One of these breakdowns/knowledge gaps is the lack of understanding between designers and developers of the web-availability of fonts commonly used in design.

Many times I’ve been handed a design and asked to create a perfect, SEO-friendly (which means using text for text, not images for text) facsimile, only to see a Photoshop file full of rich, vibrant, and proprietary Adobe fonts.  In this situation, unless there are either project funds allocated for font licenses or a willingness on my part to break the law (by finding and using an illegal copy of the font), I know that I’m going to disappoint both the designer and the client. This should stop for two reasons: it’s not my fault, and I get the blame.  Clients buy the paintings, not the machines, and the difference between the two is my responsibility.

There’s probably not much in the previous paragraph to surprise you. The reality of the problem is obvious and the workarounds are well-known. Less obvious is the reason for the font knowledge gap. It’s surprisingly common, and it’s as much our fault (developers) as it is theirs (designers). Fortunately, the solution is easy. And since we programmers think we’re the smart ones, it’s easy enough to accept responsibility for the task… communicate with your designers!!

Ideally you’re working close enough with your designer to tell him before the design phase begins which fonts are available. More likely you’ll be handed a complete design and asked to do your modular part of the process. But even in this situation, don’t be afraid to inform. Tell the designer/project manager/whomever exactly what to expect for their fonts. If they’re not willing to make changes, at least your part in producing a superlative/lackluster website will be better understood. Don’t take the fall for an uninformed design process! Instead, communicate… and make the beautiful design the beautiful machine.

To build the websites our clients and designers expect we must communicate with the designer and explain which fonts will be available to us in the next phase. Together we can build a better web… And be heroes, both!

Google’s Chrome Web Browser and Chrome OS Give Us A Glimpse Of The Future Of The Internet!

The next giant leap in laptop computing is all about the internet and the cloud, brought to you by Google!

If you’re not a follower of Google and internet technology, you probably haven’t heard much about Google’s recent jump into the world of laptop computing. When you first see a Chromebook, it doesn’t really look any different from any of the slick new laptops of the summer save the Google Chrome logo on the case, and for the most part it’s not radically different from a hardware standpoint. Flat screen, thin profile and a minimalist modern design fitting of any high end laptop (think Apple, Dell, ect.) are all great design elements but in no way revolutionary. That’s okay though, because it’s not the hardware of a Chromebook that is the game changer, it’s the software.

In a traditional laptop computer, the actual computer itself is what makes it special whether it’s a high resolution monitor, tons of RAM or a really fast processor. But in a Chromebook it’s the software, or lack thereof, that makes it stand out. You see, unlike a traditional laptop computer there is nothing to install once you pull it out of the box. You don’t have to load Microsoft Office, or download web browsers or photo editing software. You don’t have to do hours of lengthy updates and constantly check to make sure your antivirus software is up to date. None of the usual time and expenses associated with a computer apply to Chromebooks because their software is fundamentally different in one very significant way: The operating system and software add-ons are all hosted on the internet and designed to interface with the cloud rather than being installed and maintained on the computer itself. It’s a pretty big deal.

Now if you’re not a computer science major, this might not mean a lot to your right off the bat, but let me explain a bit more why this is significant. Until now, there wasn’t really a standard for operating systems. Microsoft Windows is obviously the most popular OS on the market, but there are others like Apple and Linux and now with the widespread popularity of tablets and smartphones there are even more operating systems such as Android, Blackberry OS and iOS. This meant that software manufacturers had to choose one OS and develop for that system or spend extra time and money developing multiple versions of their software to work on multiple operating systems, which can be quite a headache and doesn’t guarantee that a file created on one OS will transfer seamlessly to another even when using compatible software. This causes software to be more expensive, harder to work with and ultimately requires more of the computer running the software. This is how personal computing has been since pretty much the beginning, with software being designed to run on a particular system. The one exception to this rule when it comes to different operating systems is the internet. There are slight variations from browser to browser (although the advance of web standards is making that a thing of the past) when looking at a website but for the most part, the Internet is exactly the same regardless of what operating system you’re using and the only factor that causes variation is screen size and connection speed. This is important because it means that the internet is the only real common ground among the myriad of devices and operating systems that have now flooded the market. For this reason many new tech companies and software developers and changing their model and focusing on delivering their content and/or services through the internet in order to make one piece of software accessible to all devices. Facebook is Facebook, Hulu is Hulu and Google is Google regardless of what type of computer you’re using.

When designing the Chromebook and the Chrome OS that would run on it, Google took into account the fact that the vast majority what people do on their computer takes place on the internet. Most people use their web browser more than every other application on their PC (or Mac, not a hater) combined and there are a lot of people that use their computer ONLY for internet and nothing else. This is significant in that they are all using machines that are built to do many things, for just one thing. It’s the equivalent of buying a 72-piece Swiss Army Knife just to get the toothpick. And for those people who do use other programs aside from their web browsers, for the most part it is productivity software like Microsoft Word or Outlook, almost all of which can be found online these days. Basically, 99% of what people use their computer for today can be done online using a web browser, so Google decided to cut out the 99% you don’t need and focus on delivering that 1% you actually use, as smoothly as possible. Enter the Chromebook.

A Chromebook is a laptop like computer, and like a laptop is has an operating system. Google tooks it’s ultra fast and high-tech web browser, Chrome, and built it out into a full fledged operating system. However, unlike Windows and OSX it is not meant to run installed software and instead it runs only web applications. Long story short it is the most full-featured, advanced web browser ever built and has a dedicated machine designed just to run it. When you open the Chromebook, it comes on in a matter of seconds without having to go through a lengthy boot period where many layers of software all have to load and start working and instead takes you straight to the web. They’ve cut out all the in-between steps that separate you from the internet and in doing so started a revolution.

Once can argue that since the inception of the smartphone this revolution has been underway, but no product has come along yet and embraced the web quite like the Chromebook. Chromebook is a computer built solely for productivity on the web and because it’s operating system and software are hosted entirely on the web, there is no need to go out and purchase expensive software, updates are handled automatically behind the scenes and the problem of viruses and spyware are all but marginalized. Chromebook takes all the unnecessary parts of a laptop, including a lot of the slow and bulky software, and cuts them out completely. There is very little you can’t do on the web today and nine out of ten working professionals would have no problem switching to a Chromebook. I work online every day, and in Los Angeles web design can be a tricky industry that requires you to be both mobile and connected at all hours of the day and night and a Chromebook is the perfect companion for a web developer on the go!

Now of course there is still a need for more robust computers and operating systems in the case of people who will use a lot of heavy software like Photoshop or any audio or video editing software, but innovations in cloud computing and data transmission will ultimately make the use of even the most computationally intense programs a reality for the web. In the mean time, anyone who uses their computer to check email, log in to Facebook and occasionally draft a word document would be well advised to investigate the ease of use and modest price tag of a Chromebook and do away with 90 second boot times and bulky work machines. The web is the future, and the future is here now!

MovieStages.com demonstrates how customizing a theme can save time and money.

MovieStages.com featured a pre-designed theme that has been carefully modified to suit a different purpose and industry.

There are a lot of choices facing people when looking to purchase or build a new website. How much time do we have to do this? How much money can we afford to spend? How important is it to have a cutting edge design or function vs. how much will we get out of it? All of these are very important questions and deserve serious consideration. For a large company or successful individual, spending the time and money to create an entirely new and unique web property is usually the way to go. It says that your business or endeavor is unique, that you have character and traits that your competition does not and helps to further the brand identity of an organization. But what if you don’t have a big budget, what if your budget is tiny? Are there options for a small budget that can produce big results?

When MovieStages.com approached us about doing a new website for their small Los Angeles based location referral business they needed a fresh and functional design, but were on a limited budget that prohibited extensive rounds of design and revision before moving into development.  They needed a solution that would give them the same outcome of an expensive, custom made web magazine but for about 1/4 the cost and that’s when we proposed the idea of WordPress theme customization. WordPress theme customization is the idea of taking a theme that has been painstakingly designed for mass sale and making customization to the look and feel of the theme in order to produce a new design.  For the most part, the structure and layout of the website will be the same, but by knowing what elements to change a skilled designer or developer can take a pre-made theme and make it look like a totally unique design. This option saved thousands of dollars in design costs for our client and allowed us to create a beautiful looking site in a very short period of time in order to meet the client’s tight deadline.

Ultimately, as a creative person working in the world of Los Angeles web design there is a point where you have to put aside your ego and desire to build something new and impressive and simply work within the constraints of your client’s budget and limitations. Accepting the situation as it is can go a long way towards inspiring a designer or developer to think outside of the box. Knowing what options are off the table and what options are still available makes the job of producing designs a whole lot easier.  In the case of MovieStages.com, when we realized that we had to use a pre-fabricated theme in order to meet our project constraints, we shifted our focus away from trying to figure out a design scheme and started looking for pre-designed themes that would accommodate the needs of our client, and could be customized to reflect their business. It didn’t take much looking before we settled on a highly functional WordPress theme named Periodic, which was designed and built by the awesome and talented Eric Ford of WeArePixel8.


Once we had decided on the theme we wanted to use, the task came to customize it.  If you look at the original Periodic theme you’ll notice that it is different in a few big ways from MovieStages.com, and that is very intentional. Like previously stated, even though much of the structure and function of the theme will stay the same (on purpose), by making calculated and strategic adjustments to small parts of the code and imagery you can make big changes.  Nobody, except perhaps Eric Ford, would recognize that this is the Periodic theme and anyone viewing the site would assume that it’s a high-end, custom designed website when it reality it’s a high-end theme with customization.

In the end, this worked out to be a great solution.  The client got a beautiful website that serves MovieStages.com’s need perfectly, WeArePixel8 sold another copy of their popular theme Periodic, and we were able to create a valuable web property for one of our clients despite the time and budget limitations facing the project.  Because we were realistic about this project and identified up front what was off that table, we were able to cut costs and come up with a plan that satisfied the requirements and was still profitable from our end.  With WordPress theme customization projects with smaller budgets can still yield big results.

WordPress is the perfect CMS for an actor or performer looking to build a website!

Hollywood and Los Angeles in general are short on a number of things such as rain, cold weather and courteous drivers. One thing they are not in short supply of: Actors.

For an aspiring actor (or musician, comedian, performer ect.) trying to catch a break in Tinseltown, the prospect of calling attention to one’s self can be quite daunting. There are literally hundreds of thousands of other people here competing with you to get a moment in the light and any progress they’ve made is progress they’re not likely to share. This puts the responsibility of being seen squarely on your shoulders. This is where your website comes in. Your website is your agent, manager, portfolio and hype man all in one. If you don’t have a website or your website sucks, what impression do you think it will make on anyone checking you out? A great impression? Probably not.

In a business as competitive as acting, everything you can do to stand out is important and if you’re website isn’t up to snuff, it can actually hurt you. Hollywood is all about appearances and an old or poorly designed/built website is as bad for your reputation as a mug shot on the front page of Variety. If someone Googles you and looks at your website and it’s an ugly, hard to navigate relic they’re likely to think you’re not that in demand and haven’t worked much. If it’s hard for them to find your head-shots, or if your video reel takes forever to load they’ll move right past you and check out the next person they may want to cast. If that is the case, you just lost an opportunity. Can you afford to let this happen to you when there are 1001 people standing in line to take your place?

Every actor needs a website, but not just any website, an Actor’s Website. An approach to design and development that has been purposefully built to accommodate the content and needs that an actor would have for his or her website.  A website for an actor needs to have a gallery of headshots, a film reel section that plays their video selections in the right format so it’s smooth and quick, and a resume page that can be added to and updated automatically.  Along with that they need an Industry page for quick reference and a killer design to tie it all together and compliment that person’s personality. A daunting task for anyone without the proper experience and know-how.


Actor’s should take advantage of free, 0pen-sourced software solutions such as WordPress that leverage the built-in SEO features of a blog with the power of a full fledged CMS. With the many plugins and widely supported user base that WordPress can claim, your website will have all of the features and functions necessary to make it useful, informative and fast. It will allow casting agents and managers to quickly reference you for head-shots, resume or demo reels. You can update your website with your many events and accolades and communicate with fans. Link your WordPress website up to Facebook and Twitter and display your entire social presence from one easy to find place.

If you don’t have a website, you need one. If your website is old or out of date, you need a new one. In the era of open-sourced software there is no need to pay a high-priced design firm $20,000 for a custom built (can’t be updated) website when for a fraction of the cost you can visit specialists and get a purpose built WordPress Website that will suit your needs even better and can’t be updated regularly. A baby named Facebook really says something about social networking . . .

Babies are a great idea. Facebook is a great idea. Babies named Facebook are not a great idea.

Unfortunately, it says something stupid.

By now you’ve probably heard about the baby named Facebook.  If you haven’t, crawl out from under your rock and turn on the news.  You won’t be able to make it five minutes before being barraged by stories of Social Networking and how it’s changing the Arab world, one revolution at a time.  As a result of the recent historic political uprisings in the Middle East and North Africa, one particularly grateful man in Egypt decided to name his new daughter “Facebook” in honor of the social networking site’s role in the overthrow of Hosni Mubarak, the long-ruling former Egyptian dictator.

This is a beautiful sentiment, and really quite a statement about the power of social networking to bring people together and give voice to the masses, but is strange to say the least.  Perhaps it’s easier to swallow if you’re a non-english speaking person, enchanted with the sound of it, or enthralled by the meaning given to it by the overthrow of an oppressive dictator.  Perhaps to an Arab speaking person Facebook is no less awkward a name than Taj Mahal or Africa is to an American.  Facebook is incredible.  I’m certainly not trying to deny it.  It has allowed communication between people like no tool before it even came close to doing.  And yet Facebook is a company, not a charity.
